Why Most Businesses Fail at Using Social Media

Most everyone with a smartphone is on social media on one platform or another. In fact, research says the average time spent on social media each day is nearly two and half hours per person.

Because of this, businesses often think it’s easy enough to just assign someone to handle their social media accounts. But, posting on personal accounts is quite different than posting on business pages.

For this reason and several others, we look at why most businesses fail at using social media.

#1: They Don’t Really Know How

Even though most people know how to use social media, they aren’t well-versed in how to use it in the business realm.

People who do social media for businesses stay up-to-date on the latest algorithms and best practices. They know what works and what doesn’t.

It can be helpful to outsource your social media to someone who does have the time to do it right with your input.

#2: They Don’t Have Time

Managing social media accounts for a business is a full time job. It’s something you need to attend to every single day even if you are automating your posts and tweets.

You want to respond to all of your comments, both negative and positive while participating in conversations. This isn’t possible if you don’t have time.

In order to avoid this mistake and fail at social media, hire someone to take care of it for you.

#3: They Don’t Have a Strategy

Social media marketing is about much more than posting happy office photos, memes, and promotions.

It’s about building relationships and enhancing your customers’ lives. Ultimately you want them to engage with your page, and you do this by having a strategy in place.

First, you have to know your audience and your target market. What are they looking for? How will they benefit from what you have to offer? Until you can answer these questions, social media is bound to be a fail for your business.

When you have answers to the above questions, you can create a strategy and social media calendar to meet their needs. Provide content in the form of videos, text, and pictures. Engage with your customers, answer their questions and comments, and you’ll grow your social media presence.

#4: They Aren’t Consistent

Are you the business that does really well posting one week and doesn’t post anything the next week?

A lack of consistency is a huge problem for many businesses. Check your page insights, know when your followers are online and post accordingly.

And, whatever you do, don’t disappear. It’s virtually impossible to gain new followers and keep the ones you have interested if you aren’t consistent.

#5: They Don’t Understand the Algorithms

The algorithms on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are vital to your sharing success.

For example, do you know the recommended character limits? Do you know that some platforms reduce your post’s visibility if it has the word “tag” or “like” in it?

Do you know how your chosen platform calculates organic reach?

While you may not know the answers to these questions, your social media manager should.

It is also important to stay current on these algorithms and how they work so you can get the best out of your social media marketing dollars.

Final Thoughts

Most businesses fail at using social media, but yours doesn’t have to be one of them.
